National award for industry-academia partnership
A cutting-edge collaboration between Aberdeen based Gas2 Ltd and Robert Gordon University’s School of Engineering has won the top accolade at the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Scotland Awards.
The Awards recognise and honour the best projects involved in the KTP scheme, which aims to help businesses improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that reside within the UK knowledge base. The award-winning partnership received financial support from KTP, which in turn is funded by the Technology Strategy Board along with the other government funding organisations.
Gas2 develops novel solutions for the gas to liquid fuel market, and has been working with Professor Edward Gobina from the School of Engineering, to optimise the operation of a miniature pilot unit which produces an output of high quality hydrogen and carbon monoxide (Syngas) from natural gas. This can then be reacted to produce a number of products including liquid fuels.
Willie Reid, Chief Executive of Gas2, and Professor Gobina were accompanied by KTP Associate and Gas2 employee, Chee Chong Chen, to receive the Best Partnership Award at the ceremony on Tuesday 2 February at Doubletree Dunblane Hydro Hotel.
Mr Reid welcomed the award saying, "We are absolutely delighted that our project has been recognised in this way. I am particularly proud of Professor Gobina and Chee Chong Chen, both of whom have helped us to produce solutions that have contributed to Gas2's technical development."
Professor Peter Robertson, Vice-Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation) at Robert Gordon University, added, "This is a fantastic achievement for Gas2 and the School of Engineering. The KTP programme facilitated the relationship between the two partners that has resulted in significant benefits for both organisations. Gaining this award is a gratifying acknowledgement of these achievements."
Robin Brown is the manager of the North of Scotland KTP Centre, and works to facilitate and optimise KTP alliances. He remarked, "Only the top 14 most highly rated Scottish KTP projects were eligible to be nominated for an award, so to win one in such exalted company is an exceptional achievement, and testament to the hard work and commitment of all those involved."
Gas2 is focussed on proving up and commercialising the best available Syngas and liquid conversion GTL process technologies, which herald radical improvements in safety, efficiency and effectiveness for greatly reduced capital outlay.
Today Gas2 has a growing proprietary technology portfolio which offers game-changing potential across a range of markets for liquid fuels and products made from natural gas.
Robert Gordon University’s School of Engineering combines a wide range of expertise in engineering with purpose built facilities and strong commercial links. Its staff work closely with local, national and international companies to ensure that they continue to provide professional learning that meets the demands of employers and produces graduates who are able to solve problems and to undertake challenging and complex problems in all walks of life.
