Unconventional gas

Unconventional Gas is characterised by coming directly from the source rock rather than having migrated into more permeable rocks where it is trapped and sealed (“conventional”). Unconventional is generally taken to mean:

  • Coal Bed Methane (CBM)
  • Shale Gas
  • Tight Gas

CBM, for example, is the natural gas found often in abundance in many coal deposits. Gas is absorbed within the molecular structure of the coal on the surface and in natural fractures. When de-watered the hydrostatic pressure reduces and the gas is released (de-absorbed).

Economic extraction of unconventional gas can be challenging & considerable technological focus currently being directed in this area.

Many of these unconventional gas deposits will be stranded due to their distance from market and the marginality of the overall business case. Gas2 believe that new generation, scalable, GTL technologies could enable the monetisation of stranded unconventional gas deposits. However, we have not yet investigated the value creation case to support this view.
